About Us

There are many reasons why you would want to visit Maldon, but for many people the thing that attracts them is that Maldon is a quaint old-style town. Many of the buildings are little changed from the way that they were at the end of the 19th century.

This is attributed to the fact that, once all the gold mines closed (the last one in 1926), there was very little else to sustain the town in an economic sense. Maldon did not become a "ghost town", but it just went to sleep for half a century. Many residents moved away, businesses closed, and the town fell into what has been described as gentle decay.

Then, in the 1960s, the town received attention from the Architecture Department of Melbourne University. This led to, in 1969, the town receiving the first "Notable Town" classification awarded by the National Trust.
